Recently, local governments have been struggling with issues caused by mountain biking. Seoul, a city known for its numerous accessible mountains, has faced increasing damage to hiking trails due to mountain bikers. This includes the destruction of steps installed to prevent hikers from slipping, which raises concerns about pedestrian safety and environmental impact.

In response to these concerns, on May 27th, Seoul City Council member Seo Jun-o proposed an amendment to the "Ordinance on Forest Culture and Recreation of Seoul Metropolitan City" to restrict mountain bike access on hiking trails.

The proposal does not ban mountain bikes from all hiking trails. Instead, it redefines and designates "forest trails" for hiking, trekking, and relaxation. It allows for the restriction of mountain bike access to some or all parts of these designated trails to ensure user safety and environmental protection.

The ordinance aims to create a safe and convenient environment for both hikers and riders, transforming Seoul's hiking trails into safe and enjoyable recreational spaces.

However, the key to success lies in individual attitudes. Pedestrians, hikers, and riders must consider each other's safety and enjoyment. Collective efforts can significantly improve the perception of mountain biking.
